PIAA Track and Field wrap: Two more state titles for ECC’s Weisner

PIAA Track and Field Results

SHIPENSBURG — Elk County Catholic senior Kennedy Weisner successfully defended her two state titles and led a District 9 Class AA contingent that collected 11 medals at this weekend’s PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium.

Weisner became the fifth girl in district history to win at least four gold medals in track and field. She won the 800-meter run in 2:09.46 and the 1,600 run in 4:45.99, the 800 win by almost four seconds and the 1,600 win by almost nine seconds. Weisner also won one state title in cross country in 2012.

Brookville’s Lanae Newsome won three triple jump titles in a row, ending that run last year, and added a long jump crown last year. Smethport’s Brandy Colley won three 3,200 run titles from 1996-98 and ran on the 1997 4×800 relay state championship relay.

Clarion-Limestone’s Patty Davis won two discus titles (1983-84), one javelin (1983) and a shot put (1984) title.

At the top of the mountain is Kane’s Olympian Amy Rudolph, who won three straight state titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs from 1989-91. Rudolph also won two cross country titles.

Also for the D9 girls, Weisner’s junior teammate Victoria Dippold was third in the 3,200 run. Friday, ECC junior Nicole Florio placed third in the high jump.

Saturday, two D9 duos medaled in the javelin and triple jump. In the javelin, Johnsonburg’s Ashley Imbrogno and Kane’s Morgan Nicholson were third and fourth respectively in the javelin. In the triple jump, Coudersport’s Jenna Gabreski was third while Johnsonburg’s Gabbi Benninger, last year’s state runner-up, tied for sixth.

For the boys, four D9 athletes brought home medals. Clarion’s Ian Corbett was fifth in the 100 dash and Brookville’s Braiden Smith finished fifth in the 110 hurdles. Karns City’s Logan Moroney was sixth in the 200 dash and Redbank Valley’s Korbin Hornberger finished seventh in the discus.

District 9 did not win any medals in Class AAA.

PIAA Track and Field – Weisner ready to defend titles; Florio, Cooper medal

Friday Results

Saturday Schedule

SHIPPENSBURG — Elk County Catholic senior Kennedy Weisner will defend her state titles in both the 800- and 1,600-meter runs at Saturday’s Class AA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.

Weisner qualified for the finals in both races by finishing among the best 12 times in the two preliminary heats in each events. She ran a 5:13.29 in the 1,600, finishing ninth among the finalists. In the 800, Weisner was fourth overall among the 12 finalists with a 2:21.04. She came in as the top seed in the 800 and second seed in the 1,600 based on times posted at districts.

Two D9 athletes won medals Friday in field events as Elk County Catholic junior Nicole Florio finished third in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 2 inches and taking the bronze by finishing with the fewest misses among the six jumpers who cleared 5-2. It was Florio’s second medal in the high jump. She tied for fifth place as a freshman in 2012 after clearing the same height she did Friday.

Brookville senior Brandi Cooper, in her third trip to states, captured her first state medal in the pole vault by placing seventh. She was one of six vaulters to clear 10 feet, 6 inches and she wound up with seventh due to the less misses tiebreaker.

A handful of other District 9 athletes managed to reach the semifinals or finals in track events and will try to secure medals Saturday. Karns City junior Logan Moroney secured a semifinal berth in the 100 and 200 dashes and he’ll try to record one of the top-eight times in that round, thus guaranteeing him a top-eight medal finish in the finals.

Clarion junior Ian Corbett advanced to the 100 dash semifinals as well, notching the best preliminary round time of 10.91 seconds. He came into the weekend as the top seed and he was one of just two runners to go under 11 seconds in the prelims. GAR Memorial sophomore Anthony Maurent, in the same heat as Corbett, ran a 10.96.

Also for the boys, Brookville senior Braiden Smith advanced to the 110 hurdles semifinals while Northern Potter senior Ethan Kibbe advanced to the 800 finals.

For the girls, Johnsonburg freshman Caitlin Viglione qualified for the 100 dash semifinals.

No Class AAA athlete advanced to the semifinals or finals in any track event nor claimed any medal finishes in the field events on Friday.
