All American Awards & Engraving/D9Sports.com D9 Boys’ Basketball Awards & All-District Teams Announced

CLARION, Pa. – Twice as nice.

For the second straight year, Johnsonburg’s Cameron Grumley and Cole Peterson are the All American Awards & Engraving/D9Sports.com District 9 Co-Players of the Year.

Joining Grumley and Peterson, who are just the fourth repeat winners in the award’s 15-year history, in earning 2014 major All American Awards & Engraving/D9Sports.com awards are Clarion-Limestone’s Dan Callen as the Rookie of the Year and Ridgway’s Tony Allegretto as the Coach of the Year.

In addition, the All American Awards & Engraving/D9Sports.com first-, second- and third-team All-District teams are also announced.

Grumley and Peterson, both seniors, had nearly identical seasons for the Rams, who finished 23-5 overall and in third-place in District 9 advancing to the PIAA playoffs.

In 27 games, Grumley scored 570 points (21.1 ppg) while adding 7.2 rebounds per contest, 4.3 steals and 3.4 assists per game.

Peterson, in 28 games, scored 571 points (20.4 ppg), while adding 6.0 rebounds, 4.6 steals and 3.7 apg.

Callen, a freshman, burst onto the scene for the Lions helping C-L to a 22-5 record, the KSAC title, a fourth-place finish in District 9 and a PIAA playoff berth by averaging 11.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, 1.4 steals and 1.2 assists per game.

Allegretto, who is the Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons, led Ridgway from the sixth seed to its second District 9 Class A title in three seasons, 21-7 record and a trip to the second round of the PIAA playoffs, the third straight year Ridgway has advanced to the second round of the PIAA tournament.

Joining Peterson and Grumley on the All American Awards & Engraving/D9Sports.com District 9 First Team All-District squad are C-L’s RJ Laugand, Ridgway’s Jeremy Breier, Cameron County’s Nate Sestina, Elk County Catholic’s Cory Huff and Keystone’s Adam Lencer.

On second-team All-District are Brookville’s Nathan Shirts, Venango Catholic’s Devin Zagar, Punxsutawney’s Brandon Mancuso, Redbank Valley’s Jake Dougherty, DuBois Central Catholic’s Dane Aucker and DuBois’ Hunter Lydick.

The third-team All-District consists of West Forest’s Logan McFarland, Redbank Valley’s Devin Shumaker, Karns City’s Logan Moroney, North Clarion’s Christian Cyphert and Kane’s Jeff Kocjancic.

This is the 15th year of the postseason District 9 awards and the 14th they have been housed at D9Sports.com (the first year, 2000, the awards were awarded by the Tri-County Sunday out of DuBois). It marks the seventh year All American Awards & Engraving has been the title sponsor of the awards.

NOTES – In order to be eligible for the award or the all-district team, a player must participate in at least 70 percent of his team’s games. In order to be eligible for Rookie of the Year a Player must be either a freshman or a sophomore who saw limited or no time as freshman … Joining Grumley and Peterson, who are the only co-winners of the Player of the Year Award, as repeat Players of the Year were ECC’s A.J. Straub (2001 and 2002) and Jesse Bosnik (2006 and 2007) and Keystone’s Garrett Heath (2003 and 2004) … Allegretto is the third multiple winner of Coach of the Year joining ECC’s Aaron Straub (2000, 2002, 2006, 2009) and Bradford’s Dave Fuhrman (2004 and 2008) … Callen is the second C-L player in the past three years to be named Rookie of the Year joining Laugand, who was Rookie of the Year in 2012.
