Second-Round PIAA basketball preview for Ridgway boys, KC and Clarion girls

BOYS CLASS A — Bracket

(9-1) RIDGWAY (21-6) vs. (7-3) CARDINAL WUERL NORTH CATHOLIC (16-10)

When: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Clarion University’s Tippin Gym

Winner gets: Bishop Carroll (District 6 champion) or Monessen (District 7 runner-up), Friday at a site and time to be announced

Game notes: Ridgway breezed to a 62-32 win over District 10 third-place team Eisenhower last Friday, also at Tippin Gymnasium. Jeremy Breier had a monster game with 29 points on 12-of-15 shooting while Ben MacDonald finished with 15 points as the Elkers shot a blistering 62 percent (23-for-37) from the field. Meanwhile at Pitt-Johnstown, Dom Robb scored 16 points and Ryan Kirby added 10 points in North Catholic’s 56-44 win over Berlin Brothersvalley of District 5. … Sophomore forward and the team’s top scorer in Jeremy Breier (17.3 ppg.) has played well down the stretch for the Elkers while Ben MacDonald (6.3 ppg.) has averaged 14.3 points per game over the last three postseason games, helping pick up the slack for the team’s second-leading scorer Josh Roselli, who missed the Eisenhower game and his status Tuesday is not known. … It’s the third straight season that the Elkers will play past the first round of the state playoffs. Last year, Ridgway beat Homer-Center in its first game before losing to Lincoln Park. In 2012, the Elkers fell to Lincoln Park in the state semifinals. … The Vikings made a trip to DuBois in December and went 1-1 at the DuBois Central Catholic Tip-Off Tournament with a 63-44 loss to Johnsonburg while its football team was playing in the football playoffs on its way to winning the Class A state title. The Vikings beat St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy, 62-34, in the other game. … In the WPIAL playoffs, the Vikings lost to Lincoln Park in the semifinals, 75-58. … These teams met last year in the DCC Tip-Off Tournament with North Catholic winning, 60-58.

GIRLS CLASS AA — Bracket

(9-1) KARNS CITY (25-1) vs. (7-3) BISHOP CANEVIN (20-6)

When: Tuesday, 6 p.m.

Where: Clarion University’s Tippin Gym

Winner gets: Seton LaSalle (7-1) or Greensburg Central Catholic (7-4), Friday at a site and time to be announced

Game notes: In last Friday’s first round, Karns City beat Girard, 42-28, for its first state playoff win since 2007. Sophomore LeeAnn Gibson led the Lady Gremlins with 19 points while Shanel Preston scored 11 points. Canevin routed Juniata, 61-30. Senior Johnie Olkosky, a three-year starter, had 17 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists and led by as many as 52-14 by the start of the fourth quarter. … Canevin is the defending Class AA state champion, but the Crusaders lost three key senior starters to graduation. Still, the two returners, Olkosky and sophomore Gina Vallecorsa, were key players as well. The Crusaders have a 6-foot-3 sophomore Becca Turney guarding the paint. … Canevin lost in the WPIAL semifinals to eventual champion Seton-LaSalle, 62-40. Three of the six Canevin losses have come to Seton-LaSalle. … Karns City has to be excited about its future as just one senior — starter Emily Schumacher — will be lost to graduation. The Lady Gremlins top four scorers are underclassmen, led by Gibson (16.3 ppg.), junior Preston (11.7 ppg.), junior Emily LoPresti (11.4 ppg.) and junior Annie Hegedus (7.3 ppg.). … According to the Harrisburg Patriot-News Penn-Live state basketball rankings, Karns City is No. 10 and Canevin is Honorable Mention.

GIRLS CLASS A — Bracket

(9-1) CLARION (21-6) vs. (7-3) QUIGLEY CATHOLIC (19-6)

When: Wednesday, 6:30 p.m.

Where: Fox Chapel High School, Pittsburgh

Winner gets: Bishop Guilfoyle (6-1) or Serra Catholic (7-2), Saturday at a site and time to be announced.

Game notes: Clarion shook off a shaky shooting effort to beat WPIAL fifth seed Frazier, 47-40. Kyla Miles led the Lady Cats with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Maci Thornton, despite a 5-for-31 shooting effort, finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and six steals. … Quigley beat District 5 champion Southern Fulton 43-33 in first round. Liz Duer scored 14 points and collected nine rebounds while Gabrielle Smith added 13 points. … The 1,000-point senior Miles (16.5 ppg.) and the junior Thornton (15.9 ppg.), a junior, lead the Lady Cats. Thornton is 10 points away from the 1,000-point milestone. … The Spartans are led by 1,000-point scorer Kristin Jackson 16.3 ppg. and junior guard Kaitlyn Smith (15.6 ppg.). Sophomore guard Gabrielle Smith dislocated her right elbow in late December and returned to the lineup in time for the playoffs. … Quigley fell in the WPIAL semifinals to eventual champion Vincentian, 65-41. … Clarion won two state playoff games last year, beating Winchester Thurston and Conemaugh Township before losing to Bishop Guilfoyle.
