First-half run lifts Bishop Guilfoyle past upset-minded Venango Catholic girls

ALTOONA, Pa. – A tough stretch in the first half turned out to be the downfall for the Venango Catholic Lady Vikings in an opening-round 49-40 loss to District 6 champion Bishop Guilfoyle Saturday afternoon at Altoona’s Fieldhouse.

Venango Catholic (19-7), the fourth-place team out of District 9, was outscored 21-6 to close out the first half after taking an early 8-2 lead, and trailed 23-16 at halftime.

The Lady Vikings, though, didn’t go away and closed to within three, 41-38, on a pair of Lindsay Homan free throws early in the fourth quarter and still trailed by just four, 44-40, after Taylor Moltz hit two charity shots with 2:27 to play.

Bishop Guilfoyle (21-5), though, didn’t allow VC to score again the remainder of the game, and the Marauders hit their free throws down the stretch – and in the entire game going 14 of 18 for the game including 10 of 14 from Lili Benzel who led BG with 19 points.

Taylor Moltz paced Venango Catholic with 13 points, while Lindsay Homan and Allison Guth each scored 10.
