Punxsy boys no match for Uniontown

DUBOIS, Pa. – Despite 22 points from Brandon Mancuso, Punxsutawney saw its season end with an 87-54 defeat to Uniontown in the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA boys’ basketball playoffs Friday night at the DuBois Middle School.

WPIAL fourth-place Uniontown (21-2), which got 22 points from Jordan Pratt and 18 from Xavier Ellis to win its first PIAA playoff game since 2002, struck quickly on District 9 champion Punxsutawney (14-10) racing out to an 11-point, 21-10, lead at the end of the first quarter and a 22-point, 47-25, lead at halftime.

Cory Geer and Clayton Dale each added eight points for the Chucks.

NOTES – There were 17 3-pointers made in the game, 10 by Uniontown and seven by Punxsutawney. Mancuso had four to lead the Chucks while Pratt’s three paced Uniontown … Punxsutawney was looking for its first PIAA playoff win in 22 years since reaching the Class AAAA championship game in 1992.
