HERSHEY — Of the six District 9 Class AAA wrestlers to make it to the PIAA Championships, three survived the first day of action Friday at the Giant Center.
The DuBois duo of Shae Bloom and Tom Sleigh at 126 and 195 pounds respective, and Punxsutawney’s Kaleb Young at 138 won their opening bouts and will wrestle in Friday afternoon’s quarterfinal round needing one win to secure a top-eight medal finish.
Three D9 wrestlers were eliminated with 0-2 records, Clearfield’s Noah Cline at 126, Punxsutawney’s Joel Bowers at 132 and Clearfield’s Jacob Verchick at heavyweight.
Bloom won a 2-1 decision in his 126 opener while Sleigh, the top-ranked wrestler at his weight, notched an easy 15-0 technical fall win late in the third period. Young won a 13-0 major decision.
Friday’s quarterfinals are set for 1:30 p.m. A win by Bloom, Sleigh or Young gets them into Saturday morning’s semifinals at 9 a.m. A quarterfinal loss puts wrestlers into the second-round consolation bouts that start immediately after the quarterfinals at approximately 3:15 p.m. Friday.
Saturday’s action begins at 9 a.m. with semifinals and third-round consolations with fourth-round consolations set for 11:30 p.m. All place bouts and championship finals will be wrestled simultaneously starting at 7 p.m.
