Johnsonburg holds off C-L in Class A boys consolation game, 57-54

By Andy Close

CLARION, Pa. – Johnsonburg-Lincoln Park will meet again, perhaps a bit sooner than most expected.

Cole Peterson scored 25 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as the Rams (23-4) held off Clarion-Limestone (21-4), 57-54, in the Class A consolation game.

The Rams held off a game C-L squad, despite not having the services of Cameron Grumley, who was out due to illness.

With the win, Johnsonburg (9-3) meets up with the WPIAL champion Leopards, whom they lost to 77-59 on Dec. 17. Of course, the Rams shocked the rest of the state in 2013, knocking off LP 59-53 in the PIAA semifinals. LP is coming a record-setting 85-41 win over Monessen.

Freshman Dan Callen, who finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, gave C-L a one-point lead with 42 seconds left on an assist from Brent Slater.

The Rams put the ball in the hands of Peterson, who drove the lane and was fouled, hitting 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game. Peterson missed his second attempt and Callen got the rebound, but traveled.

Christian Cherry was fouled by R.J. Laugand with 14 seconds left, making 1-of-2, but Zane Hodgdon grabbed a big offensive rebound and converted both foul shots after being fouled.

C-L was unable to get off a last second attempt to tie the game, as they turned the ball over with one second to play.

Clarion-Limestone trailed by as many as nine, 42-33 late in the third quarter, before going on a 11-0 run, taking the lead on a pair of free throw by Jesse Pezzuti with 5:46 to go.

Laugand had 16 points and six assists to lead C-L, which will play Bishop Carroll, the District 6 champion in the first round Friday.

Hodgdon finished with 13 points and 11 boards for the Rams.
