Early run helps Venango Catholic girls beat DCC

By Chris Rossetti

CLARION, Pa. – Venango Catholic built a 17-point lead after 9 ½ minutes and then held off a DuBois Central Catholic comeback attempt to get a 58-40 win over the Lady Cardinals in the District 9 Class A girls’ basketball quarterfinals Friday night at Clarion High School.

Venango Catholic scored 12 of the game’s first 13 points and led 23-10 at the end of the first quarter and 27-10 with 6:21 to go in the first half thanks in large part to nine points from Taylor Moltz and eight from Lindsay Homan. The Lady Vikings still led 33-16 with 1:35 left in the half before five straight points from Riley Assalone to end the half got the Lady Cardinals within 12, 33-21, at the break.

DCC then cut the lead to eight, 33-25, early in the third quarter before Venango Catholic pushed the advantage back to 12, 41-29, at the end of the quarter.

The Lady Cardinals, though, continued to fight hard and were back within eight, 41-33, after an offensive putback by Angel Cardamone with 6:43 to play in the game.

Venango Catholic, however, answered with an 11-2 run that featured six more Moltz points to seal the win.

Moltz led VC with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Ava Homan chipped in 15 points and Lindsay Homan 13.

Maria French led DCC with 15 points, while Kylee Schaffer had 10 including a perfect 8 of 8 from the free-throw line.

Venango Catholic will meet Keystone in the semifinals next week at a time, date and location to be determined.
