Defending champ Clarion dumps ECC, gets rematch with Port Allegany

By Rich Rhoades

BROOKVILLE — Looking like a team intent on defending the title it won last year, the Clarion Lady Cats will get a rematch with the team they beat in last year’s District 9 Class A Championship game.

The fourth-seeded Lady Cats led from start to finish in a 67-40 over fifth-seeded Elk County Catholic Friday night at Brookville Area High School, clinching at least a top-four finish and state playoff berth.

But head coach Roger Walter’s team wants to do better than just a state playoff game. The Lady Cats beat Port Allegany, 56-41, last year and Port ran the table this year and takes an unbeaten record into next week’s semifinal showdown at a site and time to be announced.

Clarion (18-6) shot 52 percent from the floor and put four players in double-figure scoring, led by junior point guard Maci Thornton’s 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. She also added five rebounds and played a strong court game. Senior forward Kyla Miles finished with 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting with six rebounds.

Grace Kroh and Laken Ganoe each scored 10 points. Kroh missed most of the game with foul trouble, but managed six rebounds as well. Ganoe led the team with eight boards.

ECC (19-6) got 11 points from Macy Neureiter, the only player in double figures.

Clarion jumped out to a 13-3 lead after the first quarter, but ECC hung with the Lady Cats in the second quarter and Clarion led 29-17 at halftime.

However, that didn’t happen in the third quarter as Clarion put the game away with a 21-12 advantage. Thornton and Miles combined to score 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting and Clarion led 50-29 heading into the fourth quarter.

Clarion’s largest lead was 29 in the final moments of the game.

NOTES: It was the third time in four years that Clarion and ECC met in the postseason. The Lady Cats improved to 2-1 in those games, beating ECC in the 2012 semis while ECC beat them in the 2011 consolation game. … Clarion is heading to states for the fourth straight season.
