C-L, Mellott dominate paint, end drought vs. Cranberry, 50-38

By Rich Rhoades

CLARION — It had been awhile since the Clarion-Limestone Lady Lions beat Cranberry, so they worked the inside, pounded the boards and came away with a solid 50-38 win over the Berries in their District 9 Class AA quarterfinal game Wednesday night at Clarion Area High School.

The Lady Lions (15-8) ended a seven-year, 14-game losing streak to Cranberry and advanced to next week’s semifinals against either Curwensville or Kane. Cranberry’s season finished at 13-10.

At the center of C-L’s attention was 6-foot senior Abby Mellott, who navigated through some foul trouble to scored 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor and 9-of-10 from the foul line to go along with 15 rebounds. Overall, C-L outrebounded Cranberry, 47-24.

Lily Port finished with 15 points and Josie Stitt added seven points and 10 rebounds. Megan Kelley, while not scoring, grabbed nine rebounds. The Lady Lions took just three 3-point shots, missing both.

Cranberry’s Emily Merryman wrapped up her impressive career with 1,915 points after going for 27 points on 9-of-27 shooting. She finishes as the seventh-leading scorer in District 9 history.

Stitt’s basket with 3:26 left in the first quarter put the Lady Lions up 5-3 and they never trailed after that, leading 9-7 after the first quarter and 24-16 at halftime.

The largest C-L lead in the second half was 13 points in the final 70 seconds of the game.

The Lady Lions last beat the Berries 64-45 on Jan. 5, 2007.
