Lencer nets school-record 47 points but Keystone falls at Punxsutawney

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – Despite a school-record 47 points from Adam Lencer, Keystone dropped a 72-67 road decision at Punxsutawney Monday night.

Lencer topped the previous school mark of 46 points set by Doug Perine Nov. 29, 1977, vs. DuBois Central Catholic.

But Brandon Mancuso, Ryan Sloniger and Tyler Young combined to score 61 points for Punxsutawney, which built a 10-point lead, 23-13, at the end of the first quarter and still led by five, 37-32, at halftime before opening the advantage back to 10, 57-47, at the end of three quarters. The Chucks hit 12 3-pointers in the game led by five from Sloniger and three apiece from Mancuso and Young.

Lencer, who has scored 102 points in his last three contests, hit 18 shots including four 3-pointers and was also 7 of 11 from the free-throw line to score the most points in District 9 since Johnsonburg’s Calvin Grumley scored 52 in a 104-96 overtime win over St. Marys Dec. 29, 2006. It was also the most points scored in regulation since Grumley scored 49 in a 72-27 win at Brockway on the night he scored his 1,000th career point.

NOTES – In the D9Sports.com era (2001-present), Lencer is the fourth District 9 boys’ player to score at least 47 points in game. In addition to Grumley’s two huge scoring contests, Elk County Catholic’s A.J. Straub had 48 in an overtime game in 2002, while Austin Tim Horton netted 47 also in 2002.
