CLARION, Pa. – If it could go right for North Clarion Friday night, it did.

The Wolves shot well, played great defense and rebounded strong in getting a key 69-31 win over Clarion in KSAC North boys’ basketball action at Clarion.

North Clarion (8-7 overall, 6-2 KSAC North) outshot Clarion (5-8, 2-4) 48.6 percent to 22.7 percent, forced 18 Bobcat turnovers and won the boards 40-25.

“We shared the ball, we ran the break well and our man defense was good,” North Clarion head coach Eddie Baumcratz said.

North Clarion led 32-11 at halftime thanks to 12 points from Christian Cyphert while outshooting the Bobcats 54.2 percent (13 of 24) to 20 percent (4 of 20) in the half.

“I kind of called them out last night,” Baumcratz said. “I told them they were underplaying. We are a lot better a team than our record shows. I’m getting tired of waiting around for the team I know to show up. The team I know showed up tonight.”

While North Clarion showed up, Clarion never really did. The Bobcats actually got worse from the field, 0-for-10, in the third quarter and didn’t score a basket in the second half until a 1:02 into the fourth quarter while also turning the ball over seven times in the third frame.

“We just didn’t show up tonight,” Clarion head coach Todd Smithy said. “I don’t know if we weren’t mentally prepared or what. You could look at the offensive end and say our shots weren’t falling, but we didn’t hustle on defense tonight either. I’m just going with we weren’t mentally prepared to play.”

Evan Cyphert led North Clarion with a career-high 17 points including the Wolves’ first 12 points of the fourth quarter. It was just the third career double-digit game – all this year – for the North Clarion senior who entered action Friday night averaging 4.7 points per game.

Christian Cyphert chipped in with 16 points, and Zayn Hargenrader 14, his second straight game of 14, for the Wolves.

Brendan Miller led Clarion with nine points and seven rebounds. Taylor Smith added eight points and Cody Hearst seven, all in the fourth quarter.
