CANONSBURG — With at least six wrestlers still alive, two guaranteed medals and four others one win away from a top-eight finish, the Brookville Raiders wrestling team found itself in fifth place at the 46th Powerade Invitational after Friday’s action.
Impressively, the Raiders are the highest Class AA team in the point standings with 85 points, trailing Franklin Regional (143), Latrobe (121), Parkland (118.5) and host Canon McMillan (90).
Still in contention for a title going into Saturday’s wrestling were sophomore Tate Ortz at 113 pounds and senior Brock Zacherl at 138. Ortz, seeded fifth, was set to meet top-seeded Spencer Lee of Franklin Regional in the semifinals after starting the tournament with three wins. Zacherl, seeded third, is also 3-0 and wrestles No. 2 seed Vincenzo Joseph of Central Catholic in the semifinals.
With his second win of the day, a 16-4 major decision over Penn Trafford’s Michael Rinsnear, Zacherl reached 100 career wins.
Zacherl wasn’t the only Raider to reach 100 wins Friday. Teammate Zach Vroman needed three wins to get to the century mark and did it with his pin in the consolation round over Blue Mountain’s Ian Cagle. He’s 3-1 and one of at least three others in the consolation brackets a win away from a medal.
Also alive are Dalton Zimmerman (3-1) at 132, Brodie Zacherl (2-1) at 160 and Bryce Town (3-1) at 220.
Brookville freshman 106-pounder Gavin Park was 2-1 going into his consolation round bout against Kennard-Dale’s Andrew Barnett, but the result wasn’t posted on the tournament site. A win would also put Park within one more win of a top-eight medal finish.
Also wrestling, but eliminated, were Cole Aaron (2-2) at 120, Brodie Joiner (1-2) at 126, Cole Clever (0-2) at 145, Jimmy Miller (1-2) at 152, Noah Cieleski (0-2) at 182 and Nate Nosker (1-2) at heavyweight.
