C-L boys win first Brookville Tip-Off title

BROOKVILLE — Led by junior point guard R.J. Laugand’s MVP performance, the Clarion-Limestone Lions won their first title at the Brookville Tip-Off Tournament since they started playing there in 2004 in a busy Saturday two-game event.

In the 77-42 blowout win over the host Raiders in the championship game, Laugand went off for a career-high 35 points on 13-of-17 shooting, including a 7-of-8 mark from beyond the 3-point line. He also grabbed seven rebounds while dishing out five steals and making five assists.

He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Josh Kahle and Kolton Stiglitz, who was the only other Lion in double figures against the Raiders with 13 points. Kahle and Josh Rankin each scored nine points.

With the exception of a 5-4 deficit early, the Lions led the rest of the way. The Raiders actually got to within 40-33 with 5:08 left in the third quarter, but C-L outscored them 37-9 the rest of the way.

Jack Huggins and Ben Cudworth both scored 11 points for the Raiders and were named to the all-tournament team.

The other all-tournament team selection was Brockway’s Andrew Serafini, who sparked the Rovers to a come-from-behind 66-51 win over Union in the consolation game. Serafini scored 13 of his 15 points in the Rovers’ 26-8 fourth quarter that helped to erase a 3-point deficit after three quarter and 10-point deficit at halftime.

In the first round played earlier in the day due to the tournament being postponed Friday night, Laugand turned in a triple-double with 13 points, 11 steals and 10 rebounds in the Lions’ 60-39 win over Union. Kahle scored 14 points while Brent Slater scored 11 points and Christian Bakewell finished with 10 points.

Brookville advanced to the finals with a 41-26 win over Brockway. Nate Shirts and Cudworth each scored 10 points, with Cudworth turning in a double-double with 10 rebounds. The Raiders led 31-26 after three quarters and outscored the Rovers 10-0 over the final eight minutes.
