Kepple leads Karns City to D9 Class AA title game for third straight year

KARNS CITY, Pa. – Tyler Kepple threw three touchdown passes and ran for a fourth score to lift defending champion Karns City into the District 9 Class AA title game for the third straight season and for the seventh time in the last eight years with a 55-6 semifinal win over visiting St. Marys Friday night.

Kepple was 6-for-11 passing for 120 yards while also throwing an interception. He completed first-quarter scoring passes of 42 yards to Dakota Mohney and 24 yards to Logan Moroney then hit Tristan Rhoades with a 25-yard scoring pass in the second quarter before also scoring on a 20-yard run later in the quarter to give the Gremlins (10-1) a 34-0 halftime lead.

Overall, eight different Karns City players scored helping the Gremlins to a 55-0 lead before third-seeded St. Marys (6-5) got a late touchdown run from Jordan Straub. Alex Feldbauer led the Dutch with 121 yards rushing on 26 carries, but second-seeded Karns City outgained St. Marys 322-175.

Adam Whited, Zach Moore, Ethan Conto and Collin Dunmyre also scored rushing touchdown for the Gremlins.

Karns City will face Kane in a rematch of last year’s title game won by the Gremlins 33-27 on a 9-yard Kepple to Mohney touchdown pass with 12 seconds to play. The game will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Clarion University’s Memorial Stadium

NOTES – Karns City beat St. Marys twice this season by a combined score of 97-6.
