D9 Volleyball: Clarion wins Class A title

ST. MARYS — The Clarion Lady Cats volleyball team beat Elk County Catholic in straight sets, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20, to capture the District 9 Class A Championship Saturday.

Bekah Nesbitt and Kyla Miles led Clarion with 18 and 10 kills respectively. Katie Eustice had 34 assists.

In the semifinals earlier in the day, Clarion beat North Clarion in straight sets while Elk County Catholic beat Oswayo Valley. North Clarion then got a chance to earn second place with a one-set “true second” match against Elk County Catholic, which ECC won 25-23.

Both Clarion and ECC advance to the first round of the PIAA playoffs on Tuesday. Clarion meets the WPIAL (District 7) runner-up at DuBois Area High School while ECC travels to North Allegheny High School in Wexford to play the WPIAL champion. Tuesday’s winners advance to the quarterfinals Saturday, Nov. 9, at sites and times to be announced.

In Class AA, Bradford and Punxsutawney reached the District 5-8-9 sub-regional finals Saturday with a trip to Tuesday’s first round of states and district champion Bradford won a rematch with runner-up Punxsutawney and will face District 10 runner-up Fort LeBoeuf at a District 9 site to be determined.
